Surround Yourself with Good People
- Surround yourself with people you want to work with every day!
- Surround yourself with people who will challenge you!
- Surround yourself with people who will make you a better person!
- Surround yourself with people who will treat you well and are good for you!
There’s a quote by speaker Jim Rohn: “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

As a coach, one aspect I’m very grateful for is my staff. Anyone who coaches a sport knows the staff can make or break a program or team. The people you show up with every day need to be good people. These are the people you’re going to rely on when it gets tough, and it will get tough. There will be conflict among players and parents, and there will be peaks and valleys. That’s part of sports, and the people sitting next to you on the bench will get you through those moments.
This principle applies at work and in school too. The staff at a school need to be solid people, and the staff at a business need to be people you enjoy working with and building with, regardless of the industry. These are the people you’re jumping out of bed to go work with day in and day out.
Surrounding yourself with good people is what makes you want to walk into work and battle every day. Surrounding yourself with good people is what makes you want to pour extra effort into your work.
These people are going to challenge you when you’ve got ideas. On our volleyball staff, we called them “Cliffs.” I don’t know how many times we would say, “I’m on a cliff, hear me out.” There were times when we all loved the ideas, and there were times when my coaches would tell me directly, “Jump off that cliff, you’re on your own.” But that’s what makes our staff or group of people work well together—the challenging of ideas and embracing them or shooting them down.
Whatever role you’re in, whether at a business, a school, or a sports team, cherish and enjoy your staff. These are the people who will make you better during tough times.

Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
